Hello Parents.
We have had a great week finishing our Astronomy unit. We had an assessment today, and the students did well. VALENTINE'S DAY CELEBRATION - Valentine's Day is coming up and we are going to have a class party on Tuesday, February 14th, from 2:00 - 2:45. The kids are welcome to bring valentines to pass out to their friends. Either homemade or store bought valentines are perfect. We do have one or more students with a severe tree nut allergy, so please avoid any treats with nuts. We have 24 students in our class, along with our instructor, Ms. Dastrup, and myself. Please have your children sign their valentines, but PLEASE DO NOT WRITE THEIR FRIENDS' NAMES ON THE VALENTINES. This will save an immense amount of time as we distribute the valentines, and it will ensure that no student is forgotten. The students will be DECORATING BAGS IN CLASS to hold their valentines, so you do not need to decorate or send a box. Thanks to those who have already sent supplies for our party. I look forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday. Have a great weekend! Sincerely, Ms. Novotne

Welcome back!
And welcome to the second term of first grade. DIBELS TESTING - The children have finished their winter DIBELS reading tests, and we are evaluating their reading progress. I have been pleased to see how much our students are learning and improving. We are going to be working closely with those who need some extra reading coaching. Our goal is to have all of our students become proficient readers by the end of first grade. OPEN HOUSE - We have an open house scheduled for February 2nd. Please invite your friends to come and take a tour of our school - give them an opportunity to find out about all of the exciting things that we are happening here. JANUARY AMBASSADOR - We are so proud of Sky, our January AMBASSADOR OF LOYALTY. Sky is a kind and true friend. She has a generous spirit and she is always willing to extend herself to help and encourage those around her. We are lucky to have her in our class. I am so proud of how diligently your children are working. I am so thankful to be their teacher. Sincerely, Ms. Novotne Hello parents.
I hope you are looking forward to having a little extra time to spend with your kids this weekend. I know that your kids are looking forward to having a day off from school. We have had such a busy, exciting week learning about Mexico, and it was so fun to see how happy the kids were as they celebrated Mexican culture and celebrations in our CET. MUCHAS GRACIAS to all of our volunteers, and also to everyone who donated supplies. Everyone pulled together in such an amazing way, and we had everything that we needed. A very special thanks to Amy Andrew, our CET coordinator, for all of your fantastic leadership and many hours of service. There are just a few things to remember as we head into the weekend: NO SCHOOL on MONDAY, JANUARY 16TH - We will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. We will see you all again on Tuesday. NO SCHOOL LUNCH on TUESDAY, JANUARY 17 - There will be no school lunch on Tuesday. The Provo school district, who provides our lunches, will be closed for a Professional Development day. This will be our first day back after a long weekend, so PLEASE REMEMBER TO SEND A LUNCH for your child. Have a lovely weekend. See you all next week. Sincerely, Ms. Novotne Hello parents, and happy New Year!
It has been so nice to welcome back all of our darling first graders. They have done such a great job of getting back into their routine; they are working hard, and ready to learn. Mexico CET - Next Friday, January 13th, is our CET on Mexico. We have so many exciting activities planned: dancing, storytelling, crafts, food tasting, and even a pinata! I hope that many of you will be able to come and be part of the fun. For those who cannot make it, but would like to donate supplies, please take a look at the sign up list. There has been much excitement in the air among the students this week - they are eagerly anticipating the holiday vacation! Let me remind you of a few things before we close out the week: Winter Break: Winter Break begins on Wednesday, December 21st. Please be aware that the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL is TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20, and it is a half day! We will return to school on Wednesday, January 4th. NO SCHOOL LUNCH: There will be NO SCHOOL LUNCH NEXT WEEK. The Provo School District, who provides our lunches, is closed for winter break. PLEASE SEND A LUNCH with your child on Monday and Tuesday. Class Party: Our class Christmas party is on TUESDAY, December 20th, from 12:00 - 1:30. I hope that many of you will be able to join us. The students will be in homeroom class all morning, and our party will begin after lunch, until school lets out. (We will follow our regular schedule on Monday.) Free-Dress Day: On TUESDAY, the students do not have to wear their school uniforms. Please wear clothing that is consistent with the school's standards, as outlined on the website. Christmas Tree Wish List: The students have picked ornaments off the Christmas Tree in our classroom with gifts ideas labeled on each ornament. This is an entirely optional activity, and if your child chose a gift suggestion without your consent, please know that you are in no way obligated to participate. Reading Calendars and Book Reports: December BOOK REPORTS ARE DUE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20th. There is no specific genre for this month, so please let your child choose a book that he/she is interested in reading. We would love to have your child continue reading over the winter break, and for this reason, DECEMBER READING CALENDARS ARE DUE JANUARY 4th. Your child should be reading at least. 20 minutes, five days a week, for a total of 400 minutes or more each month. Class Website: : Thank you for checking out my new website, and for taking the time to stay informed. Congratulations: Lexi and Sophie were the 1st and 2nd place winners of our semi-annual handwriting contest! Great work, girls! I wish you all a wonderful holiday with your families and loved ones. I am so grateful to be working with such delightful students and such wonderful families. Sincerely, Ms. Novotne |
